The first official pictures of the new BMW X5 has been released. Sharing the smooth curves seen in the BMW 5-Series and 3-series the new look seems to be more of an update of the BMW X5 then a fresh new style.
The interior however has been fully revamped. Much wider and longer than it’s predecessor it now has the much awaited 3rd row optional seats allowing it to accommodate 7 adults. The dash is less cluttered thanks to the highly controversial iDrive system, joystick styled gear lever and an electronic parking brake system.
Performance goes in the way of 2 engine choices, a 3.0L 272 horsepower inline V6 and a 4.8L 355 horsepower V8 (pushing 0 to 100km/h in 6.5 seconds). There is no information yet on whether a 6 speed manual version will be made available but the standard 6 speed automatic remains.
BMW announced that the new X5 would utilise a new torque converter mechanism and updated software in an effort to decrease shift times and promote smooth operation under high loads.
Additionally the 2007 BMW X5 will boost its reputation as one of the best handling four wheel drives thanks to a new platform and an updated version of the permanent 4WD iDrive system.
Expect the new BMW X5 to go head to head with the new Audi Q7 and updated Mercedes M-Class when it drives into showrooms in Australia mid-2007.
